Un-friending & Feeling Fine

My Facebook friends list is smaller....and it is a good thing!

I woke up this morning doing what I usually do, checking the latest updates on my phone. I know it isn't the healthiest way to start my day, in my defense this only happens on weekends! This morning as I was scrolling through my feed, a "friend" posted something in regard to yesterday's March For Our Lives. It was negative and accusatory toward parents who allowed their children to march, it struck a nerve. I clicked the un-friend button without a second thought and it felt great! This particular person often posts rants that are negative and derogatory, I've decided I don't need that in my virtual life anymore.

A little while later I opened up my phone and yet another "friend" who also posts negative and derogatory stuff a lot posted something similar to what I had read earlier. Again I clicked un-friend and continued feeling fine about my decision.

Here's the thing, I made a conscious decision to not post anything political or contentious on my Facebook when I decided to become a teacher, for many reasons. I'm not saying teachers shouldn't post what they want on social media, I just feel it is the best decision for me to have those conversations in my real life instead of my virtual life.

I respect everyone's right to voice their opinions. I continue to have many FB friends who don't have the same opinions I do. The difference is the way they voice their opinions. I just don't feel the need to waste my time reading or listening to negativity.

I'm all for respectful debate, in fact I welcome it!

How do you handle issues on FB or with your virtual friends?
